The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), also known as the hellbender salamander, is a species of giant salamander endemic to eastern North America. They are considered threatened in their eco-systems. While they are not known to bite humans, they will when provoked. The hellbender is both a predator and prey, truly an important part of the food chain. The true number of hellbenders is not known due to their elusive nature and deeply camouflaged skin.
